Industrial Relations update
The article below outlines the upcoming industrial relations agenda with Santander, detailing the crucial forums where we meet with senior business leaders to represent you and our members. These meetings are a cornerstone of our work, ensuring the voices of our members are heard at the highest levels, and are one of the fundamental parts of your role representing your members.
The Purpose of these Meetings
As a union representative, you were nominated and elected by our members to be their voice. The industrial relations forums are a primary channel for this representation. We meet with senior leaders for each business area, typically every three to six months, to discuss a range of critical items, including:
- Health and Safety
- Workplace Culture
- Broader HR and Casework Trends
- Collective issues raised by our members
These meetings provide a structured opportunity to hold the business accountable and work in partnership to improve the working lives of everyone at Santander.
Our Approach: How the Meetings Work
For every business area meeting, local representatives will be given the opportunity to attend. If you haven’t attended one before, here is what you can expect:
- Structure: The meetings begin with a business update from senior leaders, followed by a discussion of points the union has raised in advance. There is also a dedicated forum to debate collective issues raised by our members.
- Duration: The meetings typically last for one and a half hours.
- Pre-meet: We hold a 30-minute pre-meeting exclusively for union reps to prepare and align on our key discussion points.
- Format: Most meetings are held virtually via Zoom.
We will also be inviting caseworkers to the HR Advice meeting. NEC representatives will be invited to forums where it is appropriate, such as the Policy & Culture meeting and our national monthly Partnership Meeting, which covers all national matters.
Health & Safety Representatives: Any representative who is, or is interested in becoming, a Health & Safety rep will need to complete the training offered by the TUC. Upon completion, you will be invited to attend the Health & Safety National Forum.

How to Attend
If you work in or support a large group of members in one of the functions listed above, we encourage you to get involved. Please register your interest by completing this form. To raise Agenda items for any meeting (at any time), please use this link here.
What will happen next?
We will review agenda items and may seek clarity from you in the next week or so. We will also send a holding invite to a pre-meet to your Santander and Advance email address to hold the time in your diary. We will share a collated version of the agenda points with the IR support team and around a couple of days before the meeting, they will send you a calendar invite or zoom link for the meeting itself along with a full agenda and support pack to review ahead of the pre-meeting. When meetings complete we will hold a short debrief and agree any actions we may have.
Please note that you must ask your line manager for facility time to attend, as operational requirements may not always allow it. For those who may have a scheduled day off, please be aware that attendance is not ‘in addition’ to any time off already granted.
If you have any questions on this approach, please do contact with Jim or Keith in the first instance.
