Wellbeing matters

There’s a lot that comes with the badge.

  • You’re the listener.
  • The sounding board.
  • The challenger.
  • The negotiator.
  • The steady voice in a storm.

And sometimes… you’re all of that before lunchtime.

Being a rep is something to be proud of. In organisations like Advance, our strength has always been our people, everyday colleagues stepping forward to support others. But while we spend so much time looking after members, it’s worth asking a simple question: Who’s looking after you?

The Weight of the Hat

  • Reps carry stories.
  • Concerns about restructures.
  • Worries about performance.
  • Personal challenges that spill into work.
  • Big emotions. Quiet fears. High stakes.
  • You absorb a lot. Even when you leave the building or close the laptop, those conversations can follow you home.

And here’s the truth:

Caring deeply is a strength.

Carrying everything alone is not.

Short & Sweet Reminders

  • You are a volunteer rep, not a 24/7 emergency service.
  • It’s okay to say, “Let me come back to you.”
  • It’s okay to ask another rep for a second view.
  • It’s okay to take annual leave and properly switch off.
  • It’s okay not to have all the answers immediately.
  • Boundaries aren’t barriers.

They’re protection — for you and for the role.

  • Look After Yourself
  • Wellbeing isn’t fluffy. It’s foundational.

If we’re tired, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained, we don’t serve members at our best.

Looking after yourself might look like:

  • Debriefing after a tough case
  • Using supervision or peer support
  • Taking proper breaks between meetings
  • Recognising when something has affected you
  • Saying no when your capacity is full
  • You cannot pour from an empty cup — and reps deserve support too.
  • Look After Each Other

One of the most powerful things about being part of Advance is that you’re never alone.

Pick up the phone to another rep.

  • Message in the group.
  • Share experiences.
  • Normalise the tough days.
  • Check in on each other — not just about casework, but about how you’re actually doing.
  • A simple “How are you coping?” can make all the difference.

The Bigger Picture

Strong reps build strong branches of the tree.

Healthy reps build sustainable movements.

If we want to continue growing, engaging and supporting members effectively, well-being can’t be an afterthought — it has to be part of the culture.

Short and sweet

  • Protect your energy.
  • Value your time.
  • Lean on your network.
  • Be kind to yourself.

“Because the many-hatted rep still needs a head underneath the hat. And that head and heart matter.”
