Coffee and a catch up with Mary Bull

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at the union.

I have been with Advance for 7 years, and I support our members on the helpline via email and web chat. The office team is the first port of call for almost all enquiries. Previously, I was with Santander in the branch network.

What inspired you to work for the union and support our members?

I really enjoy interacting with our members daily, and helping to alleviate their worries is rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I previously worked in the Santander branch network for 16 years and was an Advance Rep for 5 years, so I have a good understanding of the industry and how the union operates. Having been a rep inspired me to work for the union after my branch closed.

What piece of advice would you give to someone contacting the helpline or the union for the first time?

No matter what the issue, we are here to help, from raising a grievance to general workplace advice; no question is a silly one!

What’s the most rewarding part of helping members every day?

The most rewarding part of my job is being there for someone who needs help and guidance, resulting in the reduction of their anxiety.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?

My hobbies outside of work are classic cars, reading history and writing.

If you could have dinner with any five people, living or dead, who would they be and why?

If I could have a dream dinner with any five people, they would be:

Winston Churchill – he was an amazing leader and an inspirational statesman. He lived to the age of 90, accomplished much during his lifetime, and would have many interesting stories for a dinner party.

Leonardo Da Vinci. His accomplishments cross so many disciplines from art to science. His paintings and inventions have made him the leading man of the Italian Renaissance, and I find him and his achievements fascinating.

Cleopatra.

She changed the world by making Egypt wealthier and more powerful while proving that a woman can succeed in a male-dominated culture.

Marie Curie

Born in Poland and discovering radium, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903 for Physics for her work on radioactivity. She also won a Nobel Peace Prize for Chemistry in 1911 along with many other awards during her lifetime. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person honoured in two distinct scientific fields. A very clever lady.

David Bowie

Finally, for musical entertainment, I would invite David Bowie (and perhaps Elvis if I could have 6!) as I think their musical talent can reach almost everyone.

What’s one interesting or surprising fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

I am a trained make-up artist in film and theatre, so if you need a make-over, give me a call. No job too small; free estimates given!

Beach holiday or City break?

City break with lots of historical sights to see; lying on a beach all day is not for me! I want to meet the locals and interact with them and their culture.

Early bird or night owl?

I do love a good night out but enjoy an occasional early night

Finally, what message would you like to share with our members?

Try to share love and kindness daily. Always remember the 3 H’s: Humanity, Humility and Humour
