Jim's update

As we approach another vital period in our Union’s calendar, it is worth taking a moment to reflect on why we do what we do. As a workplace Representative, you are the vital bridge between our members and the leadership. You haven’t just been given a title: you have been elected to actively drive agendas on your members’ behalf.

To do that effectively, we need to be present, proactive, and plugged into the membership. Here is everything you need to focus on right now to ensure your branch’s voice is heard loud and clear.

Shaping the Future: Conference Lite & Motions

Our upcoming Conference Lite is a fantastic opportunity to streamline our focus and tackle the most pressing issues facing our workplaces. However, the agenda isn’t set by the senior team—it is set by you and the members you represent.

Your Next Steps:

  1. Talk to your members: Take the time this week to understand their current views.
  2. Submit motions: Translate those member insights into formal action. Head over to the Union webpage and use the official forms to submit your motions.

Showing Up and Breaking Barriers

Driving an agenda requires active participation. To truly represent your members, you must consistently engage with the forums you are expected to attend. Your seat at the table is where real influence happens.

We know that balancing a day job with Union responsibilities can sometimes be a challenge. Therefore, please remember two crucial things:

  • You are legally entitled to undertake Union activities and duties.
  • The senior leadership team is here for you. If management or anyone else puts barriers in your place that prevent you from representing your members, do not struggle in silence. Reach out to us—we are here to support you and escalate these issues whenever necessary.

Note: If you currently do not have a confirmed date for your next Area Committee Meeting, please get in touch with your National Executive Committee (NEC) Rep as a matter of urgency.

Growing Our Strength: The ‘Starter for 10’ Campaign

A reminder to all Reps that the ‘Starter for 10’ campaign is in full swing. Every single Rep should be actively discussing this campaign with both existing members and potential new recruits.

Organising is the lifeblood of our movement. It’s a simple equation: the more members we have, the more representative and powerful our informed collective voice becomes. Use the ‘Starter for 10’ talking points to turn those workplace conversations into new memberships. More voices mean more leverage when we negotiate on the issues that matter.

We are a Union community

Ultimately, we are more than just a network of workplaces—we are a Union community.

Being a Rep can be demanding, and we must look out for and support one another. We cannot operate in silos. We can only drive real change by working together, sharing best practices, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder.

Thank you for your continued dedication, your passion, and your hard work. Let’s get out there, talk to our members, and shape the agenda together.

Thank you all for your ongoing, dedicated support.
