What is mediation?
Mediation is led by an impartial third party who creates a safe space for colleagues in conflict to talk openly, listen, and agree on a way forward. It’s voluntary, confidential, and focused on solutions that work for everyone.
CIPD research shows that 25% of employees experience workplace conflict each year, and over 90% of mediations reach agreement.
When Can Mediation Help?
- Poor communication or unclear role boundaries
- Personality clashes or relationship breakdowns
- Perceived bullying or insensitivity
- Situations where concerns can’t be resolved directly with a manager
Mediation is not a replacement for grievances, which remain essential for serious issues such as discrimination or harassment
Your Role with Mediation as a Union representative
Our reps are often the first point of contact when members feel upset or in conflict. You can:
- Listen confidentially and help members consider their options.
- Explain mediation as an alternative to formal processes
- Refer members to a trained Caseworker for ongoing discussion and to help understand how we can best support our members.
A Way Forward
Advance Union is committed to supporting members in choosing the right path — whether that’s mediation or a formal grievance. By encouraging mediation where appropriate, reps help build a culture of respect, collaboration, and early resolution. We will be updating our members in the November E-Magazine.
Every time you raise awareness or refer a case, you strengthen our workplaces. Together, we can make sure members feel supported, respected, and empowered.
Please remember though you are not expected to be an expert, just a friendly confidential ear who helps direct our members to the right support.
